Industry 4.0 & Internet of Things

The concept of the Internet of Things is becoming increasingly popular with the help of Industrial 4.0. The first industrial revolution (1.0) started with steam machines and systems that convert water energy into mechanical or electrical energy. In the second industrial revolution (2.0), electrical production was made. In the third industrial revolution (3.0), a digital revolution was made by the using of information systems and electronic cards.Industry 4.0 is known as the fourth Industrial Revolution and is a term that encompasses automation systems, communication systems and production technologies. The introduction of production based on cyber-physical systems together with the 4.0 industrial age. The industry will be used in all industrial areas until the end of the 21st century, starting with the Internet of Objects, Cellular Transport Systems and MIT, and continuing with Autonomous Interaction and Virtualization in the future. Objects can be defined as the Internet, the existence of objects with completely different addresses among themselves, and a network and communication across the world.

What is Industry 4.0 ?

In today's world, the necessity and simplicity of digitalization, control, supervision, measurement, recording and reporting of all mechanical and electrical systems has brought us into the era of Industry 4.0.
With Industry 4.0, all systems that require control and measurement communicate with each other and bring tremendous ease to the user. Therefore, The goal of Industry 4.0 is to take us beyond automation systems, to integrate the requirements and benefits of the Internet age, and to ensure that systems communicate with each other.

Industry 4.0, which has a structure covering all fields such as simulation, autonomous and robotic systems, system integration, Internet of Things, Big Data, cloud computing, cyber security, has brought various weaknesses and hazards when it comes to security.

The industry 4.0 is basically based on 6 principles.

  • Support for all relational databases
  • Virtualization
  • Modularity
  • Autonomous Structure
  • Service Orientation
  • Interoperability
  • Benefits of Industry 4.0

  • Productivity Growth
  • Cost Reduction
  • Creation of new and modern services and models
  • Formation of modularity in production
  • Systems are environmentally friendly and sustainable
  • Easily detect faults and failures in systems
  • Systems have self-awareness

  • Internet of Things

The concept of Internet of Things means that cognitive devices, mechanical and electrical machines, even animals or humans, transfer data without user-machine / user-user interaction. The concept of things in the concept of Internet of Thingscan be a motor sensor or a valve, or any wireless device. Even a user can even be called an object when it is considered in relation to communication systems. All kinds of mechanical or electrical devices in the systems, any object related to the industry or information, communicate with each other. They are already guaranteed to be one of the most important communication areas of future, the Internet of Things which allows them to decide on the processes of self-monitoring, controlling, opening, closing and so on.
The concept of Internet of Things is one of the most important developments of theIndustry 4.0 that allows devices may communicate each other by extending the emerging communication industry beyond the users.

    Potential Threats with Industry 4.0

By 2020, more than 50 billion devices are expected to communicate with each other. In the next 25-30 years, It is expected that being smart all systems and devices such as, cities, houses, logistics with the combining of e-commerce networks by using internet environment to affect approximately 46% of global commerce network area. Threats to any of these ecosystems pose a potential hazard for all global or local systems.

While the Industry 4.0 is increasingly important, Developments in the innovative fields such as Smart Cities, Virtual reality, Ultra Wide Band technologies(UWB), Artificial Intelligence are integrating all these systems together and create some opportunities for potential cyber attacks on these systems. Integrated and co-operating systems have become compulsory as a whole to be protected against these threats.
